Every year on September 29, people all over the world celebrate World Heart Day. The day is celebrated to raise awareness about the growing concerns about heart health, cardiovascular disease, the impact of excessive exercise on the heart, and how taking care of the heart is of the utmost importance.

The ultimate goal of World Heart Day is to draw the world’s attention to behaviors that can prevent individuals from becoming prone to cardiovascular disease, as well as teach people how to manage the potential risks associated with such an important body organ. The World Heart Federation established this day to raise awareness of the various cardiovascular problems and diseases affecting the world’s population today.

Here are the critical tests which are extremely essential in determining heart health:

  1. Coronary angiogram: In a coronary angiogram, X-ray imaging is used to view the heart’s blood vessels. This is usually done to check for a blockage that could be limiting blood flow to the heart.
  2. Echocardiogram: In this ultrasound test, the structure of the heart is checked. It can diagnose several heart complications such as cardiomyopathy and valvular disease. This type of testing does not use radiation.
  3. Coronary Computed Tomography Angiogram (CCTA): A coronary computed tomography angiogram (CCTA) is a 3D imaging test method that identifies plaque or any other cause that narrows the coronary arteries. In this, a dye is injected into the body and computed tomography, which is a combination of X-rays and computer technology, is used to produce images.
  4. Electrocardiogram: An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart. An EKG reflects what is happening in different areas of the heart and helps identify any problems with your heart’s rhythm or rate. An EKG is painless and takes approximately 5-10 minutes to perform.
  5. Nuclear cardiac stress test: In this test, a small amount of radioactive material is used as a tracer to create images of blood flowing into the heart. The test is performed at rest and during activity, effectively detecting poor blood flow or heart damage.
