Data integration was cited as a high or very high impediment of new-application installation by nearly 70% of respondents in a recent global study of IT professionals and business users. The poll was used as the basis for a new research from The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI) titled Data Integration: Using ETL, EAI, and EII Tools to Create an Integrated Enterprise, which included interviews with industry experts. From both a data warehousing and an enterprise-wide strategic view, the research assesses the recent developments of data integration technologies and processes. Data quality and security, a lack of a business case and limited finance, and a weak data integration infrastructure are the top three data integration concerns identified by the poll. Large organisations are moving toward enterprise-wide data integration architecture, whereas midsize companies are focusing on data integration from a sales and business intelligence (BI) perspective, evaluating data integration products based on their ability to integrate with the company’s existing applications and infrastructure.

The Futuristic Approach
