The 36-year-old Spaniard, who won the title in Cincinnati in 2013, was playing his first match in more than a month after pulling out of his Wimbledon semi-final against Nick Kyrgios with an abdominal injury.

“When you come back from injury when you win the first match, things get better,” Nadal said. “That wasn’t the case today

Nadal started the season with three titles and 20 straight wins but heads into the US Open after just one hard-court match of the summer.

“This tournament was tough for me. He played better,” Nadal said. “It’s hard to take a lot of positives from this match.

“I need to practice. I need to come back better. That’s right.”
