“Architecture is ultimately the art of problem-solving.”

Rocco Design Architects is a Chinese architectural practice based in Hong Kong. Working in a region with disparate cultural and physical landscapes, and where values from diverging times and places converge, Rocco Design’s work is grounded in the belief that architecture is the embodiment of culture – embracing and reinterpreting the past, as well as addressing modernity – and the requirements of contemporary living. Rocco Design’s works are marked by their sensitivity and sensibility. While always eager to explore and innovate, they are nonetheless aware that architecture, rather than just an art, is ultimately the art of problem-solving.

Rocco Yim founded his own practice in 1979 and was one of the co-founders of Rocco Design Partners in 1982. The firm has received many local and international awards and citations for design excellence since its inception and has won its first international competition in 1983. Under his stewardship in design, the firm has grown significantly over the years both in size and reputation. Rocco has been actively involved in dialogues with the cultural and architectural communities both locally and overseas. His emphasis on design excellence and social responsibility has become very much the firm’s aspiration for the future. Rocco Yim is at present Principal of Rocco Design Architects Associates.

Notable work:

  • Wesleyan House Methodist International Church

Apart from Principal Mr. Rocco Yim, Rocco Design currently has five Directors and about 140 staff with offices in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Their works have been consistently awarded both locally and overseas, including a First Prize Award for the L’Opéra de la Bastille international competition in 1983, ARCASIA Gold Medals in 1994 and 2003, the Chicago Athenaeum Architectural Awards in 2006, 2011, 2013, and 2016, the Kenneth F. Brown Award in 2007, the World Architecture Festival category winner in 2011, German Design Council Awards in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 and two Lu Ban Awards in 2017. The firm has exhibited four times in the Venice Biennale over the last decade, in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2012, and held its first solo exhibition at the Berlin Aedes Gallery in 2015. ROCCO was awarded the first prize in the invited design competition for Times China’s Nansha Headquarters in 2022.

“Architecture is a passion, a vocation, a calling — as well as a science and a business. It has been described as a social art and also an artful science. Architecture must be of the highest quality of design. Architecture provides, in the words of Marcus Vitruvius, the great Roman architect and historian, “firmness, commodity, and delight.”
