Local artist Paal Anand has been honored with the prestigious International Prize for the New Great Masters by the Fondazione Effetto Arte at this year’s Art Expo New York. The award ceremony, held at the iconic Sanctuary at Church of the Ascension in Brooklyn on April 4, celebrated Anand’s powerful contributions to contemporary visual art and storytelling.

Recognized for his unique lens on Greek mythology and human emotion, Anand’s conceptual artworks blend fine art photography with cinematic storytelling. Known for his striking monochromatic compositions, Anand reimagines mythological narratives with raw emotion and depth, revealing the flawed, complex nature of ancient gods.

Formerly a visual effects veteran with credits on “Hellboy,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and Eminem’s “Without Me,” Anand transitioned to fine art, bringing his technical expertise into emotionally resonant imagery. His recent work includes mixed media pieces featuring rare Palladium and Gold prints that explore the fragile balance between urban infrastructure and the natural world.

Signature pieces like Heracles Hurls Lichas and Alagea and the Erymanthian Boar exemplify his style—muscular, mythic, and deeply human. Each work is an invitation into a world where grandeur meets vulnerability.

“This recognition is truly humbling,” said Anand. “It affirms years of exploring stories that connect us across time and culture.”

Anand’s work has previously earned accolades including the Graphis Gold Photography Awards and spots in renowned exhibitions such as the Arte Laguna Prize. A new collection will be unveiled at an upcoming solo exhibition in Culver City.
